Toning vs. Building Muscle

Many people head to the gym hoping to achieve what they want their body to look like, and I have heard of many instances of people not attaining their desired look.  They then proceed to stop lifting weights either because they are not building enough muscle or are building to much making them look “buff”.four-hour-body-weight-lifting

The reason for this is that people don’t understand how a muscle repairs itself after a workout.  By changing the amount of weight and repetitions, you can manipulate your muscles into fast acting or long – lasting muscle contractions.

Building Muscle

This is for the people who want to look “buff” and the athletes who make quick actions in their sport (football or soccer for example).  To achieve this, you must maximize each set by using a high amount of weight and low number of reps.  Also, you must practice quick repetitions when you do exercises – do not prolong each rep.

This is for the people who want to look “lean” and the athletes who make long and repeated actions (long – distance running).  To achieve this, you must maximize each set by doing a high amount of reps with low weight.  This allows the muscle to be stretched more and to add a greater effect, you should elongate each rep.

I know my girlfriend frequently asks me for exercise advice, usually about ways to tone the muscle that she already has.  The attempt of toning muscles can be a difficult process and this is something that seems most women can find difficult because they do not want to look “buff”.

The problem is that many people begin this process and begin to see that they are building muscle at first.  My argument to that is of course you need to build muscle at the start!  And then as you continue, the lean muscle will begin to take shape as you continue to commit to exercises that consist of high repetitions and low weight.

Conclusion

There will always be a fine line between doing too much weight causing someone to build more muscle then they intend to and vice – versa.  Everyone is different and you need to find that fine line between too much weight and too little.  My advice to you is to use have an idea of what you are looking for and learn your body.  Don’t be afraid to try different things and challenge yourself.  If you don’t challenge yourself, your body will not change.  By challenging yourself, you can reach the look that you desire by using the correct amount of weight and repetitions in your exercises.
